Solarshield Questions and Answers

Solarshield Technology

What is SolarShield?

SolarShield is the name given by Craghoppers to their range of sun protective fabrics and clothing.

What does it do?

SolarShield clothing has a varying Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 30 – 50+ which means that the maximum the fabric only allows 1/50th of the UV radiation falling on the surface of the garment to pass through it. In other words, it blocks 49/50ths or 98% of the UV radiation, thereby protecting you from the sun. UPF 50+ is the highest rating allowed.

How does it work?

The Ultraviolet Protection Factor is determined by a combination of three things – the density of the fabric construction, the type of yarns used and the colour of the fabric.

Some of the SolarShield products say they have also been treated with Zinc Oxide – why is that?

Zinc Oxide provides additional protection because it reflects some of the sun’s radiation, thereby reducing your exposure to UV radiation and helping to keep you cool. It also has an antibacterial effect and will help to keep your clothes a little bit fresher for longer.
