Head Nets work very well in combination with insect repellents to double your defences and they can also be used quite effectively on their own in low risk areas, thereby allowing you to use less insect repellent - not always a pleasant thing to be smearing around your face!

Available both untreated or treated with Permethrin insecticide and with hole sizes ranging from quite large for mosquito protection in hot and humid climates to very small for protection from midges in cooler climates.

Bug Proof Mosquito Head Net - Treated

The Bug Proof Mosquito Head Net can be worn on its own, although it's probably better to wear it over a hat to keep it away from your face. It is proof against mosquitoes and flies and the draw cord around the bottom can be used to ensure complete protection. It is treated with Permethrin - an insecticide that can kill insects on contact - and it can be retreated with Bug Proof Clothing Treatment as and when required.

Ideal for travelling or working in tropical and sub-tropical areas where there is a likelihood of sustained attrack by mosquitoes. Also good for protection from flies when horse treking.

Care Plus Mosquito Head Net - Untreated

The Care Plus Mosquito Head Net, can be worn on its own, although it's better to wear it over a hat as shown in the picture to keep it away from your face. It is proof against both mosquitoes and midges and the draw cord and toggle around the bottom can be used to ensure complete protection.

The Care Plus Mosquito Head Net is not treated with Permethrin or any other insecticides and this could be seen as an advantage if you don't like the idea of Permethrin coated netting billowing in your face all the time. The polyester netting is much finer and softer than the Bug Proof product which can make it more pleasant to wear, although this also means it's a bit harder to see through and ventilation isn't quite so good.

Essential if you are travelling, camping or working in areas where there is a likelihood of sustained attack by midges. Packs down to practically nothing for storage, and it is supplied with a tough little stuff sack to protect it from damage.

'The Stopper' Midge Head Net - Untreated

'The Stopper' Midge Head Net from Totally Herby of Scotland is designed specifically to stop Midges and prevent them from biting, whereas they can often wriggle through a Mosquito net in their desperation to attack.

'The Stopper' Midge Head Net is made from a very fine, soft mesh that is shaped in loosely at the neck with elastic and finished with a 6cm 'collarette' at the bottom which can be tucked in under your T-shirt or jacket collar, etc. It even has a showerproof, breathable microfibre top in place of the mesh because it has been known to rain from time to time in Scotland!

'The Stopper' Midge Head Net is supplied in a resealable grip-seal plastic bag. It is available in several different colours and it has not been treated with insecticide.

Highlander Kalahari Bush Hat with Head Net - Untreated

The Kalahari Bush Hat from Highlander is a sand coloured bush hat made from a soft but tough, stone washed cotton material. It is supplied with an integrated head net that is stored in a pocket inside the crown, ready for use when needed.

The hat has a 12" brim (30cm) and four brass vents in the crown for ventilation (fitted with a metal gauze screen to keep insects out) and a cord to keep it in place.

The head net is stored in a pocket inside the crown and the end of the net is actually stitched in place inside, making sure that it always stays with the hat. The hat is reversible, so the net can be worn over the brim of the hat (as shown in the picture alongside) or alternatively it can be worn over your head with the hat sitting on top. The net is proof against midges, mosquitoes, flies and ticks.

Highlander Sudan Hat with Head Net - Untreated

The Sudan Hat from Highlander is an olive green bush hat made from a tough cotton canvas material, supplied with a separate head net that is stored in a pocket inside the crown, ready for use when needed.

The hat has a 13" brim (33cm) complete with a brass press-stud at each side so the brim can be fastened up if required. It also has four brass vents in the crown for ventilation (fitted with a metal gauze screen to keep insects out) and a cord to keep it in place. The cord is actually in two parts - one loop goes behind your head and the other goes under your chin and is secured with a sliding toggle - an arrangement that keeps it firmly in place at all times, even in a strong wind.

The head net can be worn over the hat to provide protection when required and it has an elasticated drawstring and toggle at the bottom to close it around your neck. The net is proof against midges, mosquitoes, flies and ticks.

Midge and Mosquito Jacket

The Midge Jacket from Pyramid offers the ultimate in protection from midges, mosquitoes and other flying insects. It is intended primarily for use in extreme conditions in places like Scotland and Scandinavia where insect attack can be severe and sustained, but it could also prove to be invaluable in many other environments as well.

The Midge Jacket provides complete protection from the waist up with full head and face coverage, leaving only the hands exposed. The wrists are elasticated to stop the little chaps from flying up your sleeves, and you can even tuck your hands away safely inside if you want to. The Care Plus Travel Net is made from a tough, multi-fibre polyester fabric - similar to the material used for making mosquito nets. It is impervious to mosquitoes, flies and bed bugs and it is impregnated with Permethrin - a contact insecticide that should deal effectively with any insects that do make it through.
